Learn to crochet a beautiful rose with our simple and free crochet rose pattern – perfect for handmade bouquets and DIY gifts!
Crocheting your own flowers is a fantastic way to add a personal touch to gifts, home decor, and special occasion bouquets. Of all the blooms you can create, the rose is a timeless classic. Today, I’m sharing a beginner-friendly crochet rose pattern that results in stunningly realistic flowers you’ll cherish.
Overview
This pattern focuses on simple crochet techniques, making it ideal if you’re new to the craft. With a little practice, you’ll be whipping up roses in no time! They work beautifully as standalone embellishments or combined into a gorgeous crochet rose bouquet.
Materials
- Yarn: Medium weight (number 4) yarn in your desired rose color. I recommend acrylic for its affordability and ease of care. You’ll also need a small amount of green yarn for the leaves and stem.
- Crochet Hook: 4.0 mm hook
- Darning Needle: For weaving in ends and assembling the rose.
- Scissors
- Floral Wire (Optional): For a more flexible stem.
- Hot Glue Gun (Optional): To aid in assembly.
Basic Crochet Techniques
If you’re a crochet newbie, here are the stitches you’ll use:
- Chain Stitch (ch): The foundation of many crochet projects.
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds or moving across stitches.
- Single Crochet (sc): A basic, tight stitch.
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Slightly taller than a single crochet.
- Double Crochet (dc): Adds more height.
- Treble Crochet (tr): The tallest of the basic stitches used here.

Rose Petals
- Magic Ring: Start with a magic ring (check out a quick tutorial if you need a refresher).
- Round 1: Chain 6 and dc 6 times into the magic ring. Pull the tail to close the circle and sl st to the first dc.
- Round 2: Ch 7. Work the following into the chain space: sl st, sc, hdc, 2 dc, tr, sl st to the next stitch of the circle. Repeat this pattern 5 more times.
- Finishing: Leave enough yarn for sewing, cut, and fasten off.
Calyx (Green Base)
- Round 1: Magic ring, chain 6, dc 6 times into the ring, close with a sl st to the first dc.
- Round 2: Ch 7. Work the following into the chain space: sl st, sc, hdc, 2 dc, tr, sl st to the next stitch of the circle. Repeat this pattern 5 more times.
- Finishing: Leave enough yarn for assembly, cut, and fasten off.
Leaf
- Foundation: Ch 12.
- Working Over Wire (Optional): Start in the 3rd ch from the hook, sc in each ch across, working over the floral wire.
- Mirroring: Fold the wire in half. Working back down the chain, do a hdc in each stitch, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc, and sl st in the last chain.
- Finishing: Add a textured border by chaining 1 and slip stitching into each stitch around the leaf. Fasten off and carefully wrap the yarn tail around the wire stem.
Assembling Your Rose
- Shaping: Gently adjust your petals for a realistic look.
- Sewing: Thread your needle and sew the petal layers together, starting from the center and spiraling outwards.
- Attaching Calyx: Apply hot glue (or sew) the calyx to the underside of the rose.
- Stem: Insert floral wire or a wooden skewer. Add hot glue for stability. Wrap green yarn around the stem, securing the leaf along the way.
Tips and Tricks
- Yarn Choice: Experiment with different yarn weights and textures for unique roses.
- Tension: Keep your stitches consistent for even petals.
- Customization: Vary colors and sizes to create a whole bouquet of crochet flowers!
