We’ll turn a simple granny square into a mini Christmas tree using basic stitches and a few color changes.

Materials & Tools
- 5-ply cotton-acrylic yarn in green, red, white, and brown
- 2.5 mm crochet hook (US B-1)
- Scissors
- Tapestry (yarn) needle

Easy Crochet Tree Ornament Pattern (Step-by-Step)
Green Base – Round 1
Magic ring. Ch 2 (counts as dc). Work 12 dc into ring, join with sl st to first ch-2 (12 sts).
Ch 1, cut yarn.
Red Popcorn Round – Round 2
Join red yarn to any st, ch 3, 3 dc in same st.
Remove hook, insert into top of ch-3, pull loop through to form popcorn.
Sl st to next st, make another 4-dc popcorn.
Repeat around → 12 popcorns total.
Join to first popcorn, ch 1, cut yarn.
Forming the Square – Round 3
Attach green yarn to any st, ch 2 (counts as dc).
In same st: (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) = corner.
Next st 1 dc, next 1 hdc, next 1 sc, next 1 hdc + 1 dc.
Next st (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) = second corner.
Repeat around for four corners; join to first ch-2.
Border – Round 4
Ch 2, dc in next st.
Corner: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).
Dc across sides, repeat corner pattern.
Cut yarn with long tail, invisible join, weave in ends.
Wreath & Bow Decoration
With white yarn, embroider zigzag lines over red popcorns.
For the bow: ch 30, cut yarn, shape into bow, sew on top corner.
Shaping the Tree
Fold square in half (diagonally from bow corner).
Sew down one side; fold bottom point up and sew again.
Tree Trunk
With brown yarn, insert hook through front and back corners.
Ch 3, work 3 tr in same space, ch 3, sl st into same space.
Fasten off.
Add a matching hanging loop on top.
Your crochet tree ornament is ready!
